Book Details:

I wrote Closing Bell to find out what it actually costs to tell the truth in real time. Dana Marlowe is an investigative reporter with eighteen years of experience and one unhealed wound: a childhood spent watching her father lose his pension to men who never faced consequences. When an anonymous source hands her a folder of leaked documents proving a celebrated battery company is built on a lie, she has fourteen hours before its founder walks onto a stage and sells that lie to hundreds of thousands more people.

I didn’t want to write a simple hero’s story. Every person who calls Dana that night wants something: a hedge fund manager with his own fortune riding on her byline, a terrified whistleblower who’s already followed home, a CFO deciding whether honesty is worth his family, an editor weighing one advertiser’s money against the truth. Dana has to figure out who she can actually trust, including herself. This is a thriller about newsrooms, markets, and the people who get hurt no matter which choice gets made, and, underneath that, a story about a daughter trying to give her father’s kitchen table the warning it never got. If you want a financial thriller with a ticking clock, morally complicated sources, and a reporter who has to earn every fact she prints, Closing Bell is built for you. The bell is ringing. Find out what it costs to hear it in time.

About the author

Meet Ryan Mercer

Ryan Mercer grew up in Fargo, North Dakota, where winters were long and the public library was the warmest room within walking distance. He read through its mystery shelves before he turned twelve and wrote his first story on a borrowed typewriter. After studying economics at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, Ryan spent twelve years as a forensic accountant, tracing money through ledgers other people hoped no one would open. The work taught him patience, and it taught him that fraud rarely looks like a crime. Usually it looks like a footnote. He drafted fiction on early commuter trains, and years of rejection letters kept him humble before Closing Bell found its shape.

For Ryan, writing is a way to ask what people owe each other when the numbers stop being abstract. His ideas come from public filings, court records, and people who watched something go wrong. He wants readers to feel a ticking deadline and the weight of a hard choice. He admires John le Carré and Patricia Highsmith, restores old fountain pens, and walks every morning with strong coffee. He lives in Asheville, North Carolina, with a stubborn beagle. His favorite rule: check the math one more time.
