Book Details:
The phone rings at 4:05 a.m., and the voice on the other end already knows her name. Nora Calder used to chase stories for a living. Now she transcribes overnight police-scanner chatter and tries not to think about the byline that ended her career. Then a stranger calls, crying, and describes a murder that hasn’t happened yet — a name, a place, a method, twelve hours before it’s supposed to occur. Nora has no way to verify any of it. She checks anyway. The calls keep coming, always at the same hour, always with the same impossible accuracy, and at first, always aimed at strangers. Nora starts stopping the murders one warning at a time, working with a detective who isn’t sure whether she’s a witness or a suspect. Then the warnings start naming people she loves. And Nora begins to understand that the calls were never really about strangers at all — that somewhere behind that frightened, familiar voice is a story she wrote nine years ago, and a debt she didn’t know she owed.
The Caller at 4:05 is a psychological thriller about an old story that refuses to stay finished, about two women held together by a phone line neither can afford to hang up, and about how far you’d go for someone whose voice you’ve never seen a face to match. It’s built for readers who like their thrillers close, personal, and running on a clock. Somewhere, right now, it’s almost 4:05.
About the author
Meet Elias Grey
Elias Grey grew up in Hobart, Tasmania, a harbour town where winter dark arrives early and every neighbour seems to hold a story. He studied journalism at Cardiff University, then spent over a decade as a long-form reporter, chasing court records and the small details people hope nobody will check. He now lives in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where the fog suits his working hours. Grey wrote his first story at nine, on the back of a ferry timetable. Turning to novels came slowly. Years of deadlines had trained him to report what happened, not imagine what might, and his early drafts read like case files. Finding his own voice took patience and many discarded chapters.
Writing, for Grey, is a way of staying close to questions that won't let go. Ideas begin with a news item or a stranger's offhand remark, then grow through months of research into procedure, places, and people. He hopes readers feel the pull of one more chapter, and close the book a little more attentive to those around them. Away from the desk, he walks the harbour at dawn, rereads Patricia Highsmith and Tana French, and keeps a notebook of overheard sentences. His guiding belief: kindness is a form of courage.
