Book Details:

Every locked door in Ashcombe hides someone’s worst secret—and Rowan Vance has made it her life’s work to find them. By day, she’s a quiet, reliable locksmith on the wrong side of the river. By night, she slips past the alarms of the city’s most powerful families and opens safes built to hold their darkest bargains. She never takes money. She never leaves a note. She takes only the one thing that can undo them—proof—and mails it to whoever has spent years trying to prove the truth alone.

It started with her father, a building inspector who told an inconvenient truth and paid for it with his career, then his life. Seventeen years later, Rowan is still following that debt uphill, toward a man named Julian Voss, who has spent four decades collecting the city’s secrets and using them to keep an entire elite bound by fear. She isn’t alone anymore. A locksmith mentor carrying his own guilt. A journalist chasing the story that got her predecessor killed. A detective who can’t decide whether Rowan is a criminal or the only real justice this city has left. And somewhere behind them, a man hired to make problems disappear for good. The Thief Who Stole Nothing is a slow-burn thriller about grief turned into discipline, and about what it costs to finally make the powerful answer for what they’ve buried. Ashcombe is watching. So is Voss. The only question left is who gets to the truth first.

About the author

Meet Finn Black

Finn Black was born and raised in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where container ships slid past his bedroom window and foggy winters taught him patience. He studied history at Queen's University, then spent nine years as a property-claims investigator, reading the paperwork behind fires, floods and quietly vanishing money. He now lives in Portland, Maine, in a narrow house with a loud radiator. Finn started writing at twelve, filling library-card envelopes with detective plots. Years of casework later, he had questions only fiction could answer. His first drafts were rejected, and he kept writing before dawn.

Writing, for him, is a way of listening to people who were never heard. He hopes readers finish his books unsettled, then a little braver about telling the truth. His ideas begin with a small, odd detail: a case file, an overheard argument, a lock left untouched. He interviews tradespeople, reads court records, and walks his settings until the streets feel familiar. He wants readers to feel conscience tighten, not just the chase quicken. Patricia Highsmith and Kazuo Ishiguro are his favorite authors; his grandmother, a night nurse, taught him to notice everyone. He restores old clocks, walks daily, and lives by one belief: the truth is patient.
