Book Details:
A bank gets robbed and nothing goes missing — not one dollar, not one bar of gold. Only three locked boxes, opened by hands skilled enough to leave no proof they were ever there. Detective Mara Voss built her first career on ledgers before she carried a badge, and she still knows a wrong number when she sees one. When Meridian Trust’s vault turns up disturbed but not empty, she’s the only one who understands this wasn’t theft — it was something closer to an audit. The three names on those boxes belong to a bank chairman, a sitting judge, and a city councilman — three careers that all trace back, with unsettling precision, to the exact same year. As Mara and a federal agent with his own reasons to want answers start pulling that thread, one of the three vanishes from a locked house without a struggle. Then another.
No Money Was Taken is a crime thriller about the debts that don’t show up on any balance sheet — the ones people spend decades pretending they’ve settled. Corbin Falls has kept its worst year buried for nineteen years, and someone patient, careful, and utterly unhurried has decided it’s time for the city to finally open its books. Tess Morgan’s debut is a slow-burn reckoning: methodical, character-driven, and built around a question sharper than whodunit — what does justice actually cost, and who’s still willing to pay it? Read it and find out exactly what wasn’t stolen — and what never should have been hidden.
About the author
Meet Tess Morgan
Tess Morgan writes crime fiction about the quiet ways institutions fail ordinary people. Born and raised in Duluth, Minnesota, she studied history at Oberlin College, then spent eleven years as an insurance claims investigator before turning to writing full time. She lives in Burlington, Vermont. She began as a child, filling the backs of her father's shipping invoices with mysteries. Early manuscripts were rejected so often that she learned to treat revision as a trade, writing at five each morning before work.
For Morgan, writing gives weight to people whom paperwork tends to overlook. She hopes readers finish her books feeling seen, and a little more willing to ask questions. Her stories begin with a small discrepancy: a number that won't match, a signature in the wrong place. She follows it through public records, permits and archives until the gap becomes a plot, aiming for readers who are uneasy mid-chapter and steadied by the last page. She admires Tana French and Patricia Highsmith, and credits her grandmother, who kept every receipt, with teaching her patience. Away from the desk she rows on Lake Champlain and browses secondhand map shops. Her guiding line is Mary Oliver's: “Attention is the beginning of devotion.”
