Short Description:

It’s plain text. Reading it. Halfway through a live earnings call, a payments company’s CFO tells four hundred investors, “The numbers are false,” then collapses on camera. Priya Anand, a young finance analyst who promised to “tell them,” is left with a hidden spreadsheet tab, the CFO’s notebook, and a promise she barely understands. As executives close ranks and someone begins following her, this financial thriller asks what a whistleblower can prove, and what proving it will cost.

Book Details:

The lie had fifty-three minutes left to live when Halyard Financial Technologies’ Chief Financial Officer looked into the camera on a live earnings call and said four words no one in the room was ready to hear. Then he collapsed. Priya Anand was twenty-seven, fourteen months into the job, and the last person he spoke to before he went down. She didn’t yet know the bruise on her wrist would be the easiest part of what came next. What she finds afterward — a hidden layer buried inside the company’s own investor deck, a bank signature that’s too perfect to be real, a notebook meant for whoever came looking once he couldn’t speak for himself — tells her the collapse wasn’t only medical, and that what she’s found is worth more to some very careful people than a colleague’s life.

The Last Earnings Call follows what it actually takes to say something true inside an institution built to keep it quiet: the slow work of building a case that will hold, learning who can be trusted and who can’t, and the particular danger of being followed by someone who never once has to raise his voice. It’s a story about numbers, and about the people who decide, one choice at a time, what those numbers are allowed to hide. Some things don’t balance because of a mistake. These didn’t balance because someone decided they wouldn’t.

About the author

Meet Evan Cole

Evan Cole writes financial thrillers about the people who notice what the numbers are hiding. Born and raised in Dunedin, New Zealand, Evan studied commerce at the University of Canterbury, then spent eleven years as a forensic accountant and investor-relations adviser, listening to hundreds of earnings calls. He now lives in Ghent, Belgium. He began writing at fourteen, filling school exercise books with mysteries, but a finance career pushed fiction aside. The idea for his first novel arrived midway through a long call, when a confident executive's answer didn't quite match the page in front of him. Finding the time, and the nerve, to write it proved harder than any audit.

For Evan, writing makes complicated systems human. He builds each book from a single question, then researches the filings, procedures, and psychology behind it until the story holds up against reality. He wants readers to feel the pulse of a ticking clock, and to finish the last page looking more closely at what they are told. Away from the desk, he swims in cold water, restores old fountain pens, and rereads John le Carré and Patricia Highsmith. A former audit partner who taught him patience remains his greatest influence. Every morning begins with a walk before the first coffee. He values honesty, curiosity, and doing small things properly.
