Short Description:
It’s plain text despite the extension. Reading it. Mara Voss, a grieving former locksmith, takes a caretaker’s job at the Aldermoor, a faded Millhaven apartment building her father never mentioned. Her only lead is his dying word: nine. The building has six floors, seven units each, and no Apartment Nine. Yet someone has paid rent on it, on time, for twenty years. In this slow-burning crime thriller, Mara measures walls, follows the money, and learns that some secrets are protected by the people who pay to keep them.

Book Details:
Somewhere inside a century-old apartment building called the Aldermoor, a door has been collecting rent for twenty years, and no one who owns the building can say why it exists. Mara Voss takes the caretaker’s job to escape her old life as a locksmith and to make sense of her father’s last words: a number, an apology, and nothing else. What she finds in the building’s ledgers is a debt nobody wants explained, a tenant who never complains, never asks for repairs, and appears on no floor plan Mara can locate. The math doesn’t work. The silence does.
When the man who kept that silence for four decades is found dead in his own basement, ruled natural causes and closed just as fast, Mara starts asking questions someone with money and patience would rather she didn’t. A car she doesn’t recognize starts following her home. A detective who believes her can’t yet prove anything. And every answer Mara pulls loose drags her closer to the guilt her father carried until the day he died and never once explained. Apartment Nine Has No Door is a crime thriller about the debts a family passes down without asking, and what it costs to finally collect on them. If you love a mystery that lives in the walls of an old building as much as in the people who can’t stop knocking on them, Mara’s search for the ninth apartment will keep you reading past the hour you meant to stop.
About the author
Meet Jack Mercer
Jack Mercer was born and raised in Sheffield, England, and now lives in Hobart, Tasmania, where he writes in a rented room above a bookbinder's shop. He studied English literature at the University of Leeds, then spent eleven years as a housing inspector, walking through old buildings and noticing what their occupants left behind. He began writing as a boy, filling school exercise books with small mysteries about his neighbours. Years later, his inspection notes pushed him toward a first novel. The early years were hard: rejected drafts, long workdays, and a stubborn habit of over explaining.
For Jack, writing is a way of paying attention. He keeps going because a half-formed question about a room, a key, or a line of handwriting will not leave him alone. He hopes readers close his books a little more watchful of the quiet details around them. His ideas begin with places, not plots. He researches through archives, building records, and long talks with tradespeople, then lets his characters decide what happens. He wants readers to feel slow dread and, by the end, a hard-won relief. Jack admires Georges Simenon, Patricia Highsmith, and Ruth Rendell, and credits a former inspector for teaching him to look twice. He writes before dawn, restores old brass locks, and walks the harbor afterward. He values patience, honesty, and curiosity.
