Short Description:

Most productivity advice treats every hour as equal. Marcus Feld, a freelancer who quit his agency job for freedom, discovers they aren’t. He had been giving his hardest work to his weakest hours and his easiest tasks to his sharpest. This narrative-driven time-management book shows how to map your real energy, sort work into three zones, and protect a daily Focus Window, so your best thinking lands where it counts, without more hours or more guilt.

Book Details:

Marcus quit his agency job to escape a schedule someone else controlled. Eighteen months later, sitting at his own kitchen table with total freedom over his calendar, he was just as tired — only now the tiredness had nowhere else to blame. The Focus Window asks a question most productivity books skip: what if the problem was never the hour, but what you put into it? Nathan Prior follows one freelancer’s slow discovery that a 7 a.m. hour and an 11 a.m. hour are not interchangeable, no matter what the clock says, and that forcing hard work into the wrong window costs more than it seems to at the time.

Through Marcus’s story, you’ll learn to run your own energy audit, sort your real work into three zones instead of one long grind, and build a protected stretch of time reserved for the work that actually matters. Along the way, the book confronts the guilt that keeps people working through their worst hours and resting during none of them, plus the client calls, family schedules, and old habits that make protecting your best time harder than it sounds. There’s no flawless week here, and no promise that the dip disappears. What Marcus finds instead is a way to see his own pattern clearly enough to stop borrowing someone else’s — and a simple argument, tested against one real working week after another, that the hour was never the true unit of a productive day. Your energy was, all along.

About the author

Meet Nathan Prior

Nathan Prior writes about work, attention, and the unglamorous reality of running a self-directed career. Born and raised in Duluth, Minnesota, he studied communication at Oregon State University, then spent a decade as an operations consultant for small design studios and independent contractors. He now lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico, with his family. Nathan filled notebooks with observations as a teenager and showed them to no one. The books came later, after years of watching talented freelancers wear themselves out on schedules that ignored how people actually work. Starting was slow. He wrote early drafts in the margins of busy weeks and threw most of them away.

For Nathan, writing is a way of thinking out loud. He keeps going because readers write to say one small change gave them an afternoon back. His ideas come from client conversations and his own mistakes, and he tests them against published research before they reach the page. He wants readers to feel calmer, not lectured. Away from the desk, Nathan walks the same arroyo trail most afternoons, cooks badly but happily, and rereads Annie Dillard. His guiding belief is simple: notice what is real, then build around it.
