Short Description:
Most morning routines are built for someone else’s life. Harrison Locke’s nonfiction self-help guide follows Noah, a composite character whose borrowed, ice-bath-and-4:45-alarm routine collapses in twelve days. What replaces it is a slower, smarter approach: three jobs for the first hour, one-change-at-a-time personal experiments, and respect for your natural body clock. Drawing on sleep and habit research, it teaches you to build a morning from your own evidence, not someone else’s highlight reel.

Book Details:
Every morning routine you’ve ever tried to copy was built for someone else’s life. That’s exactly why it kept failing you. Harrison Locke’s Your First Hour, Your Rules follows Noah, an ordinary guy whose day is already being run by other people before his feet hit the floor: an alarm he didn’t choose, a phone he can’t put down, a string of other people’s priorities. After a quiet but pointed comment from his manager, Noah does what most of us do — he finds a routine online that promises transformation, and follows it exactly. What happens over the next twelve days will feel uncomfortably familiar to anyone who has ever set an ambitious alarm and quietly given up on it by the end of the week.
This isn’t a list of habits to adopt. Drawing on real research into sleep inertia, chronotype, and the shakier science behind “willpower depletion,” Locke explains why borrowed routines fall apart, and lays out a different approach: testing your own mornings like a fair experiment, one change at a time, until you have real evidence for what actually works in your own life. Honest, practical, and unwilling to oversimplify, this book won’t hand you a new routine. It will teach you how to stop reacting to your alarm, your phone, and everyone else’s emergencies, and start building a first hour that’s actually yours. Your alarm will still go off tomorrow. What happens in the sixty minutes after that is up to you.
About the author
Meet Harrison Locke
Harrison Locke was born and raised in Duluth, Minnesota, where long winters taught him to value quiet, unhurried mornings. He studied psychology at Bowdoin College and spent nearly a decade as a logistics analyst in Milwaukee, tracing why well-planned shipments still arrived late. Today he lives in Asheville, North Carolina. He has kept notebooks since his teens, but writing books began after a string of failed morning routines borrowed from strangers. Early drafts were rough, and he spent two years learning to turn research into plain, human sentences.
For Harrison, writing is a way to think clearly and be useful. He keeps going because readers write back with their own small wins. He hopes people close his books feeling capable rather than guilty, with a method they can test rather than a rule to obey. His ideas begin with everyday frustrations. He reads the studies, questions them, and trusts only what holds up in ordinary life, including his own. Away from the desk, he reads Annie Dillard and Daniel Kahneman, hikes ridge trails at dawn, bakes sourdough, and keeps a daily one-line journal. He values honesty, patience, and curiosity. His guiding belief: small, tested changes beat grand resolutions.
