Book Details:

The fastest person in the room isn’t always right, and Adrian Kessler is about to learn that the hard way—at the negotiating table, and at his own kitchen table. For twenty years, his instinct to interrupt, argue, and win built a construction company from two trucks into a forty-person firm. Now that same instinct is costing him things no contract can fix: his daughter’s trust, his business partner’s patience, and a marriage that has quietly stopped bringing him anything worth arguing about. The Power of the Three-Second Pause follows Adrian through eighteen months of learning one deceptively small habit—waiting three seconds before he reacts—and discovering how differently it plays out depending on who’s across the table. A supplier trying to break a contract. A daughter who won’t explain why she’s quitting a team she loves. A business partner with news that could unravel seventeen years of partnership. Each moment tests whether Adrian can tell the difference between the speed that built his company and the speed that’s slowly taking his relationships apart.

Grounded in real research on negotiation, emotion, and the brain’s reaction to conflict, this book pairs a genuinely human story with a practical, repeatable skill for your next hard conversation. It doesn’t promise to make you calmer or quieter—it promises something more useful: knowing, in the moment, which kind of moment you’re actually in. Some habits take a lifetime to build. This one takes three seconds. The only question is whether you’ll use them.

About the author

Meet Daniel Clearfield

Daniel Clearfield grew up in Bozeman, Montana, in a household of talkers, where he learned early that how people say things often matters more than what they say. He studied psychology at Whitman College, earned a master's degree in organizational communication, and spent fifteen years as a workplace mediator and communication trainer. He now lives in Asheville, North Carolina. Daniel filled notebooks with observations long before he considered writing a book. The idea arrived when he noticed that the people who recovered best from conflict were rarely the most eloquent. They simply waited a moment before answering. His early drafts were stiff and clinical, and he rewrote them until a warmer, story-driven voice emerged.

He writes because he believes small habits change relationships more than grand resolutions do. His ideas begin in real conversations and are then checked against published research. He hopes readers feel understood rather than lectured, and that each chapter leaves them one thing to try that same day. Away from the desk, Daniel hikes the Blue Ridge, bakes sourdough, and rereads Viktor Frankl. He values patience, honesty, and second chances.
