Book Details:
Chief Judge Elias Ashworth’s death was ruled a suicide. His daughter believes it’s a lie. Elena Ashworth has spent her career as a defense attorney distrusting official stories, and she isn’t about to make an exception for her own father. Behind a hidden panel in his study, she finds a black leather notebook: rows of numbers, ciphers, and dollar figures that mean nothing to her — until they do. What she uncovers is not one man’s private failure but a conspiracy fourteen years in the making, tying a construction company, a broken labor movement, a silenced journalist, and a sitting senator to a pattern of ruined lives her father helped build from the bench. Somewhere inside that pattern is Marcus Webb, the boy Elena loved and lost on the one night neither of them has ever stopped paying for.
The Judge’s Black Book is a legal thriller about what truth costs the people who go looking for it, set in a city where the courthouse lights never quite reach every corner. Grant Holloway, who spent years covering city hall and the courts before turning to fiction, writes with the patience of someone who has watched real cases unravel in real rooms, trading car chases for cross-examinations and easy answers for the slow, unglamorous work of setting a record straight. If you’ve ever wondered what a good person owes the truth once it starts costing them everything, start here.
About the author
Meet Grant Holloway
Grant Holloway grew up in Galway, on Ireland's west coast, where long winters and his grandmother's tales of local trials taught him that every courtroom holds a drama. He studied law at Trinity College Dublin, then spent fifteen years as an appellate researcher and court clerk, reading the files other people never see. He first wanted to write at fourteen, filling school notebooks with invented verdicts. Decades later, a sealed case left him with a question the record could not answer, and The Judge's Black Book began. The early going was hard. He wrote at night after work and rewrote his opening chapters more than a dozen times.
For Grant, fiction is the one place where justice can be examined honestly. He hopes readers close the book asking who holds power, and who pays when it goes unchecked. His ideas come from old case reports, overheard conversations, and rain-soaked streets. He researches carefully, then lets his characters surprise him. He wants readers tense, curious, and quietly moved. Grant admires Graham Greene and Harper Lee, and credits his grandmother as his first storyteller. He walks the river every morning, keeps a notebook in his pocket, and plays chess badly but happily. His guiding belief is simple: truth is patient. He now lives in Savannah, Georgia.
