Book Details:
5:41 a.m. The phone rings, and by the time Claire Bennett reaches her fulfillment center, smoke is rising over the loading dock, an employee is on his way to the hospital, and forty frightened people are waiting for the truth. Words Under Pressure follows one leader through the longest day of her career — the hours when a rumor outruns the facts, a lawyer, a comms director, and a VP all want different things from the next sentence, and every word Claire chooses either steadies the room or breaks it further. This isn’t a book about fire safety. It’s about the gap between what actually happened and what people have already decided must have happened, and what a leader owes the people standing in that gap.
Built around Claire’s case — a composite drawn from real leaders who’ve faced this kind of morning — the book distills a five-part method for speaking honestly while the facts are still arriving: what to confirm, what to admit you don’t know yet, how compassion and clarity work together instead of against each other, and why a promise to update people matters as much as the update itself. There’s no script here, and no easy fix. Just the pressure of a shrinking clock, a workforce watching for the smallest sign of evasion, and a leader learning — sentence by sentence — how much a single honest line can hold. If you’ve ever had to speak before you had all the answers, this book was written for that morning.
About the author
Meet Oliver Hartwell
Oliver Hartwell grew up in Bangor, Maine, the son of a ferry mechanic and a school librarian, and he still believes the best sentences are the plain ones. After earning an English degree at the University of Vermont, he spent twelve years in hospital and logistics operations, where he learned how much one honest sentence can steady a room. He filled notebooks as a teenager with dialogue overheard at the harbor. Years later, after watching a capable manager freeze during an overnight emergency, he began drafting the book he wished she'd had. His harshest editor was himself; he rewrote the opening chapter nine times.
For Hartwell, writing is a way to make hard moments easier to face. He hopes readers finish his books feeling steadier and a little braver about saying “I don’t know yet.” His ideas begin in conversations on loading docks and hospital corridors, then get tested against interviews and incident reports. Away from the desk, he reads Orwell and Ursula K. Le Guin, walks his beagle, Biscuit, before sunrise, and cross-country skis whenever the snow allows. He lives in Duluth, Minnesota, with his wife, and keeps a notebook beside the coffee pot.
