Book Details:
A ransomware note freezes Rachel Doyle’s screen on an ordinary Tuesday, and eleven days later, her candle company is still standing — but barely. One Risk Away tells the true-to-life story of a near-disaster that forces an entrepreneur to confront the question most business owners avoid until it’s too late: what happens to everything you’ve built if the one thing you never planned for finally happens? Marcus Stone follows Rachel through the wreckage — frozen cash, panicked calls, a contract clause that could cost her biggest account — and into the harder work of rebuilding something sturdier than hope. With a risk consultant’s guidance, she learns to name the dangers hiding inside a business that looks healthy on paper: the single supplier, the irreplaceable employee, the client who has quietly become half of everything.
This is a book about the gap between working hard and being prepared, and what it costs to close it. Two years later, when trouble returns bigger and far less forgiving, everything Rachel built is tested at once, with no guarantee it holds. Written for owners who’ve never had time to consider what could go wrong, One Risk Away turns formless dread into something you can act on. Part story, part practical toolkit, it’s for anyone who runs something they’d be sorry to lose — and quietly suspects they’re standing closer to the edge than they’d like to admit. You are one risk away from finding out. This book exists so you can find out on your own terms.
About the author
Meet Marcus Stone
Marcus Stone grew up in Dubuque, Iowa, where teenage summers in his uncle’s hardware store taught him how quickly a good small business can be shaken by one bad week. After earning a business degree from Gonzaga University, he spent more than a decade as an operations and continuity consultant, helping small manufacturers and family-run companies prepare for disruptions no business plan predicts. He now lives in Asheville, North Carolina. His writing began as notes kept after client emergencies. The notes became essays, and the essays became One Risk Away. His hardest early challenge was making risk management feel human rather than technical.
For Marcus, writing turns hard-won lessons into tools owners can use before they need them. He hopes readers finish his books calmer, not more afraid, with one clear first step. His ideas come from conversations with owners, and he checks every figure against public sources. He admires Atul Gawande’s The Checklist Manifesto and credits a retired insurance broker for teaching him to ask better questions. Away from the desk, he hikes the Blue Ridge, bakes bread, and starts each morning with a handwritten to-do list. His guiding belief: calm is built in advance.
