Book Details:

An ordinary Tuesday. Rain that won’t stop. And an eighty-year-old water main that finally gives out beneath a quiet stretch of Alder Street. Before the Crisis follows five small businesses — a restaurant, a dental practice, a boutique, a hardware store, and an accounting firm — through the same flood, the same power outage, and the same terrifying first hour. None of them saw it coming. None had more warning than the others. What separates them isn’t luck, money, or the size of their team. It’s whether each owner had quietly prepared, long before the water ever rose.

As the lights go out block by block, five very different responses unfold: a freezer clock ticking down on thousands of dollars of inventory, a dental drill stopped mid-procedure, an unlocked door and an empty store, a stockroom filling with water while the front counter stays busy, and one laminated card that turns chaos into calm. Some of these businesses will claw their way back. Not all of them will. Written as a gripping, character-driven narrative and grounded in real disaster-recovery research, this book asks the question every owner eventually has to answer: if this happened to you next Tuesday, which business would you be? It’s not a technical manual, and it isn’t a disaster story told to frighten you — it’s a close, honest look at what readiness actually looks like when it’s tested for real, and what it costs when it isn’t. The water is already rising somewhere. Before the Crisis will make sure you’re not the one caught unprepared.

About the author

Meet Harrison Vale

Harrison Vale grew up in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where prairie blizzards taught him early that preparation is a quiet form of care. He earned a degree in public administration from Western Washington University, spent fifteen years in county emergency management, and now advises small businesses on continuity planning from his home in Burlington, Vermont. He filled notebooks with weather logs and short stories as a boy, but the idea of writing books came later, after he watched capable owners lose everything for want of a one-page plan. His early drafts were dry, and readers drifted away. Telling the story fixed that.

Writing, for Vale, makes a quiet problem visible. He keeps going because of the readers who write to say they finally sat down and drafted the plan. He hopes they finish a book feeling steadier, not scared. His ideas begin in conversations with owners and in after-action reports, which he studies closely before building composite characters. He wants readers to feel accompanied, never lectured. Away from the desk, he reads Wendell Berry, bakes bread on Sundays, and hikes the Green Mountains. He writes before dawn, guided by one belief: calm is built in advance.
