Book Details:
Adrian Vale gave away eleven billion dollars on live television and told the world he did it for his son. Every share, every account, every asset — placed in an irrevocable trust for a twelve-year-old boy named Elias. There’s just one problem: reporter Maya Cross can’t find a trace of that boy anywhere his father’s company didn’t put it there first. No school will confirm he’s enrolled. No doctor has ever treated him. No unguarded photograph exists of him past age four. Every document, every inquiry, every dead end leads straight back to Vale Dynamics itself.
Maya has chased a billionaire’s secrets before, and she knows exactly what waiting too long once cost her. She won’t make that mistake twice. But the deeper she digs into the Sable Harbor Trust, the clearer it becomes that someone has spent eight years, and a fortune, making sure this particular truth never surfaces — and that someone is watching to see who comes looking next. The Secret Beneficiary is a financial thriller about grief, power, and the lies wealthy men tell to protect what they love most. Harrison Drake builds a slow-burning mystery of shell companies, sealed records, and a small town guarding a decade-old secret, where every answer only sharpens the next question. A boy who may not exist. A fortune riding on him anyway. A reporter running out of time to learn which is true. Some inheritances were never meant to be found.
About the author
Meet Harrison Drake
Harrison Drake grew up in Thunder Bay, Ontario, a lake-port town where winters were long and the public library was the warmest place to spend them. He studied political science at the University of Manitoba, then spent nine years as a probate paralegal in Winnipeg, reading wills, trust deeds, and the quiet disputes families leave behind. He now lives in Savannah, Georgia. Drake started writing at fourteen, filling school notebooks with detective stories. Courthouse work eventually gave him his subject: how people hide things in plain sight, using ordinary paperwork. His first manuscript was rejected nineteen times, so he wrote the next one before dawn, ahead of his day job.
Writing, for Drake, is a way of staying with a question long enough to answer it honestly. His ideas usually begin with one odd detail in a public record, and he researches by reading the dullest sources first. He wants readers unsettled first, then moved, and hopes they close each book more curious about the documents behind the headlines and kinder toward the people inside them. Away from the desk he reads Graham Greene, walks before sunrise, and repairs old clocks. His rule comes from his mother: pay attention.
