Book Details:

One car repair. Three weeks. A budget that had worked for fourteen months, gone. That’s how fast it happens—not because you weren’t careful, but because your budget never had a place for the bill you couldn’t see coming. The Crisis-Proof Budget is a practical, no-jargon guide for anyone who has ever done everything right with money and still gotten blindsided by the one expense nobody plans for. Following Nina, a disciplined paralegal whose color-coded spreadsheet couldn’t survive a failed timing chain, this book walks through what actually breaks when an unplanned bill meets a fully allocated paycheck, and how to build a system that doesn’t break the same way twice.

You’ll learn the four-bucket structure that separates bills, irregular costs, savings goals, and true emergencies before they collide, how to size a reserve that fits your actual life instead of a borrowed number, and how to find the money to fund it without upending everything else. For the moment a crisis is already underway, the book includes written response plans for job loss, home and car damage, sudden travel, and medical bills, so you’re never inventing a strategy at 11 p.m. with a stack of bills on the table. This isn’t a promise that nothing bad will ever happen to your finances. It’s a plan for what happens next. If you’re tired of feeling one bad week away from undoing a year of discipline, this is the book that changes what that week actually costs you.

About the author

Meet Nathan Prosper

Nathan Prosper writes about money for people with no patience for jargon and no appetite for judgment. Born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he studied economics at Ohio State University, then spent nearly a decade at a community credit union, sitting across the desk from members whose careful budgets had been undone by one bad week. He has loved writing since grade school, when he filled spiral notebooks with stories nobody asked for. The credit union gave him something worth writing about. Getting it onto the page was harder than he expected; his early drafts read like policy manuals, and finding a plain, warm voice took years.

Now based in Portland, Oregon, Nathan sees writing as a way to give readers the calm explanation he wished he could offer every member at the end of a hard day. His ideas begin with real household problems and are checked against public consumer-finance guidance. He wants readers to feel capable, never scolded. Away from the keyboard, he hikes the Columbia River Gorge, cooks big pots of chili on Sundays, and rereads Mary Roach and Wendell Berry. He values honesty, steadiness, and preparing in quiet moments for the stormy ones.
