Book Details:

Virelia has floated in the sky for three hundred years, held up by a bargain nobody living remembers making. Wren Ashford has spent her whole apprenticeship listening to that bargain hum through the iron bones of Wellhouse Three — until the day a ring that has never once cracked splits open under her hand, and the city itself forgets, for four terrifying seconds, which way is down. Wren isn’t supposed to be able to hear what the wells feel. Her mother could, before a “containment accident” killed her nine years ago and closed every question that came with it. Now the tremors are getting worse, records keep vanishing, and the High Wellwright who promised full cooperation keeps finding reasons not to give it.

Chasing the truth means trusting people the Guild taught her to fear: a black-market scavenger with a grudge against the Watch, a Warden who isn’t sure which oath she owes anymore, and a mentor who has spent nine years being careful about exactly the wrong things. It means asking a question her mother asked first, and asking it louder. Somewhere beneath the city’s iron foundations, something ancient is still listening. It has been waiting three centuries for someone to ask it what it actually wants — and Wren is running out of time to find out before the wind that holds Virelia aloft decides it has given enough. A YA fantasy about consent, cowardice, and the courage to ask twice. Come find out what the wind remembers.

About the author

Meet Aiden Nova

Aiden Nova was born and raised in Valparaíso, Chile, a hillside port where staircases, cable cars and sea wind taught him how people build lives on uneven ground. He studied geomatics at the University of Tasmania and spent eleven years as a hydrographic surveyor, mapping the seabed for harbour authorities. He now lives in Bergen, Norway, where he writes in the early hours before the first ferry leaves. He began writing at nine, copying fairy tales into school notebooks and changing the endings. Long nights at sea later gave him a restless question: what happens when everyone depends on something nobody thinks to thank? That question became his debut novel, written in fragments between shifts and rejected many times before it found a home.

For Aiden, writing is a way of asking questions twice. His ideas come from overheard conversations, old charts and unfinished sentences, and he researches engineering, folklore and history until a story world can bear weight. He hopes readers close the book unsettled first, then quietly hopeful. His favourite writers are Ursula K. Le Guin and Italo Calvino. He walks every day, flies kites badly, and keeps a pencil on every windowsill. His guiding philosophy comes from his grandmother: "Ask kindly, and ask again."
