Short Description:

Marcus Bennett is forty-two, a desk-bound accountant who gets winded carrying a box of records up one flight of stairs. This practical health and strength-training guide follows his first year of rebuilding, and it shows that decline after forty is far more negotiable than most people believe. Through a simple six-movement framework, protein-smart family meals, daily mobility work, and honest attention to sleep and recovery, it offers a realistic path to lasting strength.

Book Details:

You didn’t lose your strength overnight. Nobody does. It happens in a hundred small, forgettable moments—a jar lid that suddenly needs a towel, a staircase that leaves you winded, a Saturday of yard work that costs you two days of a stiff back—until one ordinary moment makes the pattern impossible to ignore. Built for the Second Half follows Marcus Bennett, a forty-two-year-old accountant who assumed he was simply “unfit,” through the year that proves him wrong. Grounded in the real science of aging muscle, hormones, and recovery, and told through Marcus’s very human stumbles, false starts, and slow-building momentum, this is a book for anyone who has quietly started resigning themselves to a smaller, more cautious version of their own body.

I wrote it because the story sold to people over forty is almost always the wrong one: that strength is a young person’s game, and the best you can hope for afterward is a slower decline. The research says otherwise. So does Marcus’s staircase. Inside, you’ll find practical, no-nonsense guidance—six movement patterns instead of hundreds of exercises, a ten-minute daily routine, meals a real family will actually eat—built around a story honest enough to include the setbacks, the stalled weeks, and the season that nearly derailed everything. Your second half isn’t a slow fade. It’s a different kind of training block. Turn the page and find out what your body is still capable of.

About the author

Meet Daniel Fitton

Daniel Fitton is a strength-and-health writer who helps adults rediscover what their bodies can still do. Born and raised in Duluth, Minnesota, he earned a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology from the University of Minnesota and spent more than fifteen years coaching and teaching strength training, most of it with clients over forty. He now lives in Rochester, Minnesota. Daniel has loved writing since high school, when he filled notebooks with training logs. Years of watching capable clients dismiss themselves as “too old” inspired his first book. Getting started was hard: he juggled early mornings, client schedules, and turning research into plain, usable language.

For Daniel, writing is a way to say what he wishes someone had told his clients sooner. He builds ideas from conversations at the gym, then checks them against current research before putting a word on the page. He hopes readers finish a chapter feeling calm, capable, and ready to begin. Away from the page, he reads biographies, hikes the North Shore, and cooks big Sunday dinners for family. He credits his grandfather, a retired carpenter, with teaching him that steady effort beats dramatic bursts. His guiding belief: it is never too late to start.
